He stared out the window, watching the city lights blur through the rain-streaked glass. The rhythmic drumming of the downpour against the windowpane seemed to amplify the hammering in his chest. He was supposed to be meeting Lisa for dinner. He'd made the reservation weeks ago, and she was always on time. He found himself compulsively checking his phone every few seconds.

Each passing minute intensified the strange feeling that had been gnawing at him all day. A cold dread seeped into him. He felt as if someone was watching him, a sensation that made him turn and look around the empty apartment.

A key turned in the lock. The door swung open, and two women stood there, their expressions mirroring each other's shock. "Mark?" one of them asked, the question hanging in the air. "You're… Mark?"
